Description

Hapstone PlaneShift Series includes components of Hapstone RS adopted for other sharpening systems.

Single-clamp knife sharpeners have consistently been less adaptable than multi-clamp systems when sharpening various blades, for instance, fillet knives. The Planeshift Clamps Upgrade is a dual-clamp solution for Work Sharp Professional Precision Adjust knife sharpeners.

How to use

Installation Guide

Remove the Original V-Clamp: We won't be using the original V-clamp for this setup, so the first step is to press the release button and remove it. Set it aside.
Install the Clamp Frame: (Can be pre-installed) Install the Clamp Bar into the center, aligning it with the slot. Use the small spacer provided along with the screw to protect the frame itself. Slot everything nicely into position, and then snug the screw into place.
Install the Hapstone Clamps: (Can be pre-installed) Once the clamp bar is secured, simply attach your Hapstone clamps onto the clamp bar. These clamps are extremely versatile—they can swivel inwards, outwards, and can be positioned anywhere you need them. For larger knives, they can be placed on the sides. These clamps also slide along the frame, giving you flexibility depending on the knife size or shape. Additionally, since this is a Hapstone clamp frame, you can use any of the Hapstone clamps available, allowing you to clamp nearly any knife with the right combination of clamps.
Install the Support Block: To minimize flex while sharpening, install the support block at the bottom of the system. Push it all the way back—it may require tilting the system slightly to fit it properly. This block will prevent any downward movement, giving you more stability during sharpening.
Install the Clamp Upgrade: Once everything is assembled, all you need to do is slide the entire clamp upgrade into position as you would with the original V-clamp. Lock it into place.

A little unhandy to adjust, but I think with some use it will get better

This is a complete piece of junk! While that clamps are solid, the mounting block inserted into the sharpener is PLASTIC, and WILL NOT LOCK into the pivot to keep the knife from moving. This makes the clamp adapter unsafe and absolutely useless. While it will clamp the knife, it won't engage the pivot control lever completely, so the knife pivots as you try to sharpen it, negating the entire point of the unit, as it can't lock the blade solidly in place during sharpening. While the clamps MAY keep longer, thinner blades from flexing, it doesn't matter, as the blade rotates up and down while you sharpen, changing sharpening angle. You can literally rotate the knife up and down with little resistance as it won't lock in place. I've had numerous conversations with Olga at Gritomatic customer support, and not only have they not resolved the issue, but eventually stopped responding altogether. Don't waste your time and money on this.

Very poorly designed, the screws have such a high profile 36º is near impossible. Very disappointing indeed. It feels like who ever designed it has never actually used it, or even tested it. I regret not making deeper research before buying, as I now see many people making the same comments on Redd-it and other places who have the exact same problem. I would go so far as to suggest that this clamp is really not fit for purpose, if the purpose is clamping a knife to a fixed angle sharpener, and being able to sharpen it. Not recommended. I refer to the clamp itself, the plastic barrel that it attaches to is perfectly functional, I like that I can turn the knife over in either direction. It is reasonably snug, wobbles very slightly, which is not what we want, but not a deal breaker. It needs a little lubrication, I use a smidge of workshop bees wax and mineral oil. My recommendation is to use the Hapstone RS Clamps, which does not have these problems, and were clearly designed properly.

This item works as if was apart of the original design from the manufacturer. There’s is one design flaw though. The rod extending through and out the back of the sharpener is a little too long. When you tilt the sharpener the rod makes contact with the back and pushes the device to the front and out of the lock position. I had to use a dermal cut off and remove the portion extending out the back of the sharpener. Now it is working as it should.

It fits but the stem is one cm longer than the factory unit and sticks out the back a bit but does not interfere with operation. The clamps can be configured to hold larger knives much like the TSProf and similar units. Two points of support keeps the knife steady minimizing flex. Most likely the longer stem is for supporting the larger knives. Rotation is positive and holds position without any play.

This clamp works exceptionally well on my WSPPA! I like that I can change the orientation of the clamps to accommodate both small and large blades. The lockup into the body of the sharpener is good, comparable to the original clamp. I do like that it can rotate either way, so I don’t have to think about which direction to put my handle. Makes sharpening much easier compared to the original clamp!

Set screw for main shaft sticks out so you cannot seat the unit flush. It makes it inoperable. Also the square nuts on the clamps stick out when I tried to sharpen at a 15 degree angle. The stone would hit the nut, not the blade. Btw, the only way I know this was because I removed the set screw all together. But that doesn't work either because there is way to much movement to get a consistent angle. I don't understand how they sold this in condition. Serious QC is needed

The clamps themselves are good but the circular plug seems to have a slight wobble both clockwise and anti-clockwise. I've solved this by gluing some plastic to the already added support piece to support under the clamps themselves. But I think this can also be solved in production by adding a turn stopper/limiter like the original clamp has.

This is a nice device that fits into the WorkSharp base perfectly. The firmly held blade sharpens more precisely than with the original WorkSharp clamp. You can see the improved results when you slice through paper, even paper towels. It is a good precaution to tape the blade of your knife so that it will not be marred in the tightened jaws of the clamp. I use painter’s tape that peels away easily afterward. A good addition to the kit would be to include the Alan wrench fitting the clamp jaws. (I was missing this at my remote worksite and it delayed me until I could obtain one.) Love the product. Highly recommend.

This is the clamp that should come with the system, there’s no wiggle or wobble, nice tight clamp, and with the two independent clamps, it’s easy to secure just about any knife, at least all of the knives I have. This is built well, simple to assemble, and easy to use, if you’re thinking about buying this, its well worth it.

Big fan of spyderco knives, and I do like the works sharp sharpening systems, but the original clamp the sharpening system came with had a hard time holding full flat grind blades steady. This clamp completely solves that problem. I am a happy customer and I have gotten awesome results.

I've used it on one knife so far. I bought it to use on my fillet knives which flex quite a bit and hoped it would "stiffen" them with the wider grip. The knife I did sharpen was a boning knife with some flex. I think it cut down on tip flex, but I am looking forward to using it with my fillet knives.

Nice adapter to enable using various manufacturers clamps for more clamping configurations. The clamps that come with this adapter are OK except for the stainless screws and nuts used to tighten the clamps on the knife blade. These screws and nuts gall easily leading the user to think they are cross-threaded. Disassembling them and cleaning the threads restores operation, but they need to be replaced with better parts. Another problem is the limited adjustment range of the spacing between the clamps. Replacing the knurled thumbscrews that attach the clamps to the bar with cap screws doubles that range. A longer bar would be nice. These problems are minor and can be relatively easily overcome, but did result in my rating of 4 rather than 5 stars.

I sharpen mostly filet and boning knives. so the ability to clamp 5 inches apart is great on these flexible blades. My issue is with the stainless steel screws and nuts. After tightening to 20 inch pounds (that’s what it took for the blade to stop moving in the clamp) the gauling seized the two together that I had to cut them apart with a dremel

I like how precision the fit of the jig is to the WSPP as it has no slop at all. The support under the clamp jig fits perfectly as well. My biggest gripe is the clamps themselves. I am having a hard time getting a secure connection on the tapered blades. I have adjusted the location of the clamps and it is still a challenge on some blades to hold securely.

Pro's: - Major stability upgrade over the stock PPA clamp - Can rotate in either direction, unlike the stock PPA clamp - Wide enough to firmly hold any knife up to 8". - Compatible with Hapstone's clamps available separately through Gritomatic Con's: - The included hex bolts are SOFT. I stripped the head on one (had to cut it out) and the other's threads were showing signs of wear. I went to the hardware store and replaced them with standard M5 hex bolts, which was a wise decision - It's best to add a little tape to the inside of the clamps, or tape your knife blade. The clamps can lightly scratch the knife Overall, it's a good upgrade if you want to commit to the PPA. For the price, I think someone considering this upgraded clamp is better off selling their PPA and buying something like a Hapstone, which can accommodate longer knives and offers more flexibility. I also think Gritomatic should consider making this clamp configurable, allowing a buyer to select any of Hapstone's compatible clamps.

When installing the new clamp bar, I discovered that it is VERY tight going into the hole for it in the Work Sharp PPA. It tight enough that I feared breaking something. I haven't tried removing it yet but I'm thinking that it shouldn't be this difficult. Thoughts?

I submitted a previous review. So this represents a new finding. I decided the sharpen my Spyderco Para 3 today. The blade is rather thin and very pointy. I got the blade mounted and started sharpening. It worked fine on side one. I should point that I uses a sharpy marker on the edge of the blade to guide me (and by using a lazer Goniometer) I determined that I needed to sharpen at a low angle of 15°. So when I flipped the knife over to work the other side of the blade in the Work Sharp PPA, the sharpening stone started rubbing on the end of the bolt which is used to tighten down the two clamps. So I had to revert back to the original PPA clamp to complete the sharpening process. I offer this as constructive input for improvement/development of this item.

Delivery was fairly quick. I used it for the first time today. I was sharpening a knife with a trailing point. The issue I encountered was that the clamp kept allowing the knife to slip after a few strokes with the sharpening stone. I tried spreading the clamps out a bit to see if that would correct the issue but it didn’t help. I think the clamps need a thin layer of silicon or cork that would prevent the blade from slipping within clamps. I also welcome any suggestions.

I prefer the clamp style over the original design, as it feels more secure overall. However, I’ve noticed that the clamp allows for more vertical movement of the knife compared to the original style. It’s possible that I’m doing something wrong, but this has been my experience so far. Additionally, repeatedly tightening and loading the screw for multiple knives can become quite cumbersome over time.

So far I am not real impressed with this. I received my order just a week ago and have sharpened 3 knives. This is a great idea and a bit of an up step for the PPA sharpener however there are some design issues or quality issues that need to be addressed. 1. The rod at the back of the Unit that inserts into the PPA is really tight and snug. You have to force it into the PPA and then really pull to get it out. 2. The bolts that hold the clamps onto the unit are constantly coming loose and have to be retightened. This is frustrating when you are sharpening. 3. One of the bolts to you tighten to clamp the units have already stripped the Allen head which is a pain to undo. Like I said, great idea but I would expect better quality for $93.

This aftermarket clamp solves a lot of the issues that the stock WSP clamp suffers from. Not only do you have two points of contact and a wider stance for long blades, the clamps allow broad blades to sit deeper within the clamps. This is a major improvement over the original stock clamp. Flex is recused greatly and the clamps really lock the blade down securely. My only criticism is the somewhat high price tag but I think it's worth it.

I was excited about this but you can't get the edge bevel the same on each side its almost a whole degree off no matter how you clamp it in.i tried multiple knives multiple times in and out trying to match it and if I put it at 19 on 1 side the other will be 18, 18.5

Fit and finish were very good. Adjustability was as expected - great. I am somewhat disappointed with the clamping. The clamps don't want to hold the blade so it won't move. Up and down movement is okay but the blades want to slip in the clamps. I will continue to work with and use hopefully it will improve. I have installed tape on the blade touching surfaces of the clamps, helps a little. I really like the use of the nuts on the clamping screws so I'm not afraid to tighten without worrying about stripping the threads on the clamps. (TSPROF) Overall a very nice addition to the sharpener.

Arrived partially assembled so the video of installing it was a wee bit outdated, but close enough to know what is going on. The clamps are what I would call tight but 100% functional. Holds most blades solid enough to put a good clean edge on. Due to the extended length, the angle(s) need to be checked, but again, not a serious issue. Good addition to the overall functionality of the WSPPA sharpener and if you are looking for an upgrade, this is the go-to item, initially. It achieves the desired results. Easy to adapt, quick to adjust, and seems ideal.

Really like how it will turn a full 360 as opposed to the 180 factory. Wide to support a variety of sizes and shapes. Only thing I see it needs is some rubber pads inside clamps
